About previously used domain names
More Frequently asked questions
How do you acquire domain names?
Through our portal, third-party providers offer domain names that have been canceled and have become available for re-registration (out of quarantine). These are previously used names, also known as the aftermarket or secondary market.
Do you also purchase domain names?
If you have one or a few names for sale and one of our contacts is interested in the name, you will receive a non-binding offer. It is also possible for us to include the name in our database and agree on compensation for management and sale based on an indicative value and/or a minimum price. After all, no one wants to be disappointed.
What does it mean when a domain name is in quarantine?
If you do not renew a domain name on time, it will go into quarantine. During this period, only the current holder can re-register the name. This right expires at the end of the quarantine period, after which the name becomes available to anyone.
How can you retrieve a domain name from quarantine?
You usually arrange this through your provider or hosting company. If you have a dispute, you can hire an expert who will handle this with the registry.
Difference between reactivation and reregistration
If a name is in quarantine and you retrieve it, you reactivate the registration. If the name becomes available after being in quarantine, anyone can reregister the name.
When does a domain name become available after quarantine?
This varies per registry and therefore per country, and you can ask your provider for more information.
What is the value of an existing domain name?
There are many factors that determine the value of a domain name. To get you started, we have summarized and explained the 10 most important points for you. Read them here, or download our leaflet for free.
What is the difference between a free domain name and one that is for sale?
A domain name that has come out of quarantine and has not been registered by anyone can be called a free domain name, just like a name that has never been registered before. A domain name that is for sale is not really a free name, but a name that can be taken over for a one-time fee for the name. This fee is exclusive of the registration costs.
Can I buy a domain name that is already in use?
Whether you can buy an existing name depends on the holder. If the name is not for sale, you can try contacting the holder or hosting partner. Perhaps there is interest in selling the domain.
What is a marketplace like SEDO.com?
On a marketplace or platform, various parties offer domain names for sale, and buyers can make an offer. The marketplace facilitates the sale. Often, marketplaces offer additional services as well.
What is the role of a domain name broker?
This can involve different roles. Often, a broker acts on behalf of the seller of a (premium) domain name or on behalf of a buyer. They may also manage a portfolio of domain names.
How do I find the user/owner of a domain name?
This starts with checking the WHOIS information. Sometimes, information is hidden for privacy reasons. If it concerns commercial information, you can contact the provider. If it concerns legal matters, you can contact the registry of the country where the name is registered.
Where can I find the history of an old website?
A useful website is the Wayback Machine, which can be found via this link. This tool has taken screenshots of websites in the past.
